With its each application, iTunes can save the data in the file having extension .ITL. Here it saves all music and data from the iTunes. For 2 different purposes 2 files are made by the library. ITunes ITL file locations are:

File extension (.itl). For windows path is \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents \My Music\ iTunes\ iTunes Library.itl and for mac path is / Users/ username /Music/ iTunes/ iTunes Library. It can contain playlists, songs, etc.

File extension (.xml). For windows path is \Documents and Settings\ username\ My Documents\ My Music \iTunes \iTunes Music Library.xml and for mac path is /Users/ username/ Music/ iTunes/ iTunes Music Library.xml. It enables another application to make use of the data saved in a library.

If an itl file damaged then all the iTunes data will be lost. It contains also song rating, user comments, etc. Although in a very unusual case, sometimes itl file isn’t recognized by your computer. This problem occurs because of the problems with registry. Registry governs the system interaction with any program or software saved on it.

However, if this file deleted then iTunes creates automatically a blank new file.
